Our Innovative Approach
At Pathfinder School, we believe that each child’s success lies in their ability to use their unique passions and talents to make our world a better place. The difference in our community starts with our name:
our learners are Pathfinders. Our role is to support and encourage them as they find their unique path.
There are a few key things that define our Learning Model:
Peer Collaboration
We encourage our learners to work together when possible. Whether on a session project, a Guiding Values Workshop exercise, or a nature walk, kids learn invaluable lessons when they are given the space to work together to solve problems. The skills our learners develop during their collaborative efforts will benefit them for years to come, in countless ways.
Guides, Not Teachers
Adult Guides serve as a resource and support partner to each learner as they work to achieve the goals they have set for themselves. This unique mentor relationship allows each learner to experience the personal growth that comes with learning to be accountable oneself, in a way that supports their social-emotional development.
Essential Skills
Our learners leverage the power of
online, mastery-based programs to acquire essential math and language arts skills. This allows our Pathfinders the opportunity to set their own learning goals and progress at the pace that is most comfortable for them.
Workshops
Each semester, our learners choose from a variety of workshops designed to help them explore their interests. Guides facilitate the workshops as enthusiastic participants, learning right along with the students; the magic really happens when the learners take a path the Guides never considered, resulting in impactful learning experiences.
Learner-Driven Goals
Arbitrary learning guidelines are not enforced here. Rather, we respect each learner as a capable individual and understand that learners become Pathfinders when they are trusted to take charge of their own learning.
Self-governance
Our pathfinders have complete ownership of their school experience, which includes working together to write the rules for our school and governing themselves. This ensures that learners are fully invested in their success and growth as Pathfinders; they take great pride in supporting each other and staying in line with the standards they have set for their community.
